The Royal Palm Tree, next to the Coconut Palm (Cocos-
Nucifera) is probably the most renown tropical palm
tree in the entire world. True to its name, the Royal
has mastery over many other palms not just for its
massive cement column like trunk,, huge smooth green
shaft, 10' long plumose fronds, but also for its fast
growth.
Very similar to the foxtail, with finer leaves similar to
the Queen palm, the Royal palm has also the ability to
grow in excess of 50'. Some say that the Cuban cousin
(Roystonea Regia) is an altogether different palm tree,
which has a more swollen trunk than the Florida Royal.
It is said that the Florida Royal has grown in the native
swamps of South Florida with a more slender trunk.
We believe, because of its close proximity to the Cuban
Royals, it's more likely to be the same species.
Because of its column-like presence, Royal Palms are
many times seen lining streets or boulevards. They
also have the reputation of being a chief landscape
icon at many fine hotels and resorts. You'll need plenty
of room to plant this one in your landscape, especially
if you are going to add it to your collection. Our Royal
palm seedlings have been accustomed to Southern
California's climate, being grown from seed here, and
not imported from Florida or Hawaii.
Being tropical in nature, it was previously believed that
the Royal palm was not able to grow in the Southern
California area, but many have disproved that in recent
years. Many mature Royals now exist in Southern
California, but are still relatively unknown.
Like the Foxtail palm, Royals are known t grow 2-3 feet
per year. This means, within 3-5 years (with care and
protection), you can have a 12' to 18' tree! Imagine
that! We have Royal Palm seedlings ranging from 2-3'
and larger specimens as well.
You can be the first to have these in your neighborhood!
